Ohio's Last Abortion Clinic Is Safe Because of Gloria Steinem

Gloria Steinem helped save the last abortion clinic in this city.

Capital Care Network of Toledo is the city’s last abortion clinic and provides healthcare to women across the Midwest.

Abortion clinics must have a transfer agreement with a local hospital to provide care in an emergency.

The Ohio Supreme Court just ruled to end surgical abortions at the northwest Ohio clinic after the Department of Health claimed the clinic’s agreement with an Ann Arbor Hospital did not satisfy the legal requirement.

That’s when the local community and Steinem, who is from Toledo, called on Promedica, a locally owned health system, to save the day.

“We must not allow a political regulatory scheme to close Toledo’s remaining abortion clinic…Democracy begins with each person’s control of his or her own body.

Without reproductive freedom, there is no democracy for American women.” Steinem stated.

Activists rallied in from of Promedica to push the health network to support Capital Care, and within hours, Promedica agreed to support women’s health.

A spokesperson stated, “Entering into this agreement aligns with ProMedica’s mission and values, including our focus on being a health system dedicated to the well-being of northwest Ohio and our belief that no one is beyond the reach of life-saving health care.” Despite the state's shrinking amount of clinics, pro-choice supports are still celebrating Promedica’s choice to get involved..
