The Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangatane and Co-operatives will be organsing the district-level conference on February 17 at Town hall.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Udupi district Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangatane convener Roshani Oliver said that KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao would be inaugurating the conference. Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes, MP M Veerappa Moily, district in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj, Byndoor MLA Gopal Poojary and Kaup MLA Vinay Kumar Sorake will be present on the occasion.
She said the three-tier local governance was strengthened following the 73rd and 74th amendments to the Constitution brought by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangatane is one such organisation which would be working for the party to strengthen the roots at the grassroot level. It extends the possibilities of involvement at the lower strata of the administrative mechanism. The Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangatane was introduced with the purpose of empowering the party through the three-tier local governance in 2004. Elections for the local administrative mechanism was possible only due to the 73rd and 74th amendments to the Constitution. She added that decentralisation of powers have made the democracy more meaningful.
