So Valentine’s Day was yesterday, and you probably think you’re home free. You won’t be bombarded by any more gooey romance for at least 11 more months. Other couples’ PDA is officially back to being frowned upon, rose sales are plummeting, and those chalky conversation hearts are back into storage where they will remain exactly the same until next February (tbh, I’m pretty sure those things are going to survive the apocalypse). But with an evil mwa-ha-ha!, Netflix is here to rip your hearts out just when you started to let your guard down, because they’re sneaky geniuses like that.
Netflix’s latest original movie, Irreplaceable You, is going to make you cry buckets of tears, and I’m talking just from the trailer alone. A rom-com, this is not! Who knows how many Kleenex boxes you’re going to need to watch the actual movie. Rose stock may have dropped, but now is definitely the time to buy Kleenex stock.
Irreplaceable You tells the heartwarming, romantic story of Abbie (Black Mirror‘s “San Junipero” breakout star Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and Sam (Game of Thrones’ Daario Naharis replacement, Michiel Huisman), who are newly engaged and have been best friends since childhood. It already sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Well, that’s because it is. Netflix is here to ruin both your dreams and romantic wishes, because this beautiful, perfect couple, who are the love of each other’s lives since literally childhood, find that the future they envisioned together takes a tragic turn when Abbie receives an unexpected cancer diagnosis. Not only do they find out they’re not expecting their first child, but then their entire relationship is put to the ultimate test, and I’m already crying. Are you crying? If you’re not crying, I don’t know what is wrong with you.
The trailer for the new movie actually gives a lot of the plot away, which makes me think there is probably some horribly tragic and heartbreaking twist coming that no one can predict. Or maybe I’m just conditioned to think that way because of Nicholas Sparks movies. But based on the trailer alone, Abbie, faced with the prospect of an uncertain timeline, begins a touching and often humorous search for a new love to take care of Sam. Along the way, Abbie makes unlikely friendships with Myron (Christopher Walken), Kate (Kate McKinnon), and Mitch (Steve Coogan) in a cancer support group. Ultimately, the emotional movie asks the question, how do you say goodbye?
