Apple to buy NAND flash chips from China's Yangtze Memory - report

Thursday 15 February 2018 | 07:30 CET | News
Apple is in talks with Yangtze Memory Technologies to purchase NAND flash chips from the Chinese chipmaker, Nikkei reports. Yangtze Memory's first factory lines, worth around USD 24 billion, in the city of Wuhan are scheduled to start production sometime in 2018. Apple plans to use these chips in new iPhone models and other products for sale in the Chinese market, according to two unnamed sources familiar with the matter.

Apple currently acquires NAND flash memory chips for its iPhones from Toshiba of Japan, Western Digital of the US, SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics of South Korea.

Yangtze Memory is an affiliate of state-supported tech conglomerate Tsinghua Unigroup. Yangtze Memory's key shareholders include China Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, an investment vehicle in China's chip sector, Tsinghua Unigroup, and the local Hubei government.
