Federer just 2 wins away from becoming the oldest world No.1

Rotterdam : Tennis ace Roger Federer is just two wins away from becoming the oldest world number one.

The Swiss began his quest to return to the top spot in the ATP Rankings for the first time in over five years with a 6-1, 6-2 trimuph over Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.

Federer, a two-time champion at the Dutch indoor event, will overtake Rafael Nadal at the top of the ATP Rankings if he reaches the semi-finals of the tournament.


The 20-time Grand Slam champion will lock horns with Philipp Kohlschreiber. Federer has a 12-0 winning record against the German.

Konta triumphs

In Doha,  Britain’s Johanna Konta beat Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-2 in the second round of the Qatar Open. Konta, on Wednesday, needed one hour and 22 minutes to get her second career victory against Suarez Navarro, who is ranked 29th in the world.

The World No. 11 will play the winner of the match between Germany’s Angelique Kerber and Australia’s Samantha Stosur in the next round.

In other action, Romania’s Sorana Cirstea stunned Belgium’s Elise Mertens 6-5, 6-4.
