Mumbai: Doctor and medical student have private chat at Worli Seaface, women extort Rs 50,000 for ‘obscene’ act

After some activist using the moral policing card, now even fraudsters are getting into moral policing. Now, fraudsters are picking on young couples who are spotted together on seasides. A 29-year-old doctor registered an FIR with Worli Police against two women for extorting money. The incident took place last week when the 29-year-old doctor and a medical student, who were enjoying a private chat at Worli Seaface.

According to a report in Mid-Day, the case was registered on the basis of a complaint by Ramesh Yadav, 29, a BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery) doctor, and Reshma Singh (both names have been changed) a second-year MBBS student.

Ramesh Yadav, in his complaint, stated, “We met a year ago when she was suffering from dengue. She had come to my hospital for treatment. We got talking after that. On February 7, we decided to meet at Worli Seaface as I was leaving for my hometown the next day,” reported the leading daily.

Yadav further added that they two were sitting at Worli seaface at around 2.50 pm when they heard footsteps behind them. After they looked around to see who was standing behind, they saw a woman taking pictures of them, and another stepped in and started abusing both of them. The woman said ‘you people come from anywhere and do obscene acts in front of our houses’. Yadav denied doing any obscene act.

After an argument, the first woman showed them the pictures she clicked and demanded money if they didn’t want to get into trouble, Yadav agreed to give whatever money he had. A  Police officer told the leading daily, “The accused women then stepped aside for a discussion and returned to demand Rs 50,000. Singh told them that they didn’t have that much money, but they could give it to them the next day. She gave them her mobile number. However, the women threatened to show the pictures to Singh’s family if they didn’t get the money in an hour.”

In the meanwhile, a woman snatched Yadav’s Aadhaar card, and after this Yadav decided to take this matter to police.  Yadav reached Worli police station and lodge a complaint against the women. And the police summoned the women to the police station. The two accused women were identified as Manisha Khakhadiya, 38, and Shilpa Charniya, 40, both residents of Dongri. On interrogation, those two women told police that they run an NGO in which Charniya is president and Khakhadiya is secretary.

The police have said that these two women conned people by claiming that they lived at the Worli Seaface, but in reality, they lived in Dongri. The Worli Police have registered an FIR, and booked those two women under sections 384 (extortion), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. The police are also investigating if they looted other couples as well.
