As per the National Statistics Institute (INE) announced the Portuguese tourism sector saw a record year in 2017.
Almost double the population of the country, around 20.6 million people has spent one night in tourist accommodation in Portugal last year.
A grand total of 57.5 million overnight stays was noted with each guest staying an average of 2.79 nights.
As compared with 2016 the overall number of guests grew 8.9 percent, this was 9.2 percent increase on 2015.
In 2016 the overnight total grew 7.4 percent climbing 9.6 percent year-on-year.
The overall number of guests in the domestic market accounted for 7.96 and the number of foreign visitors coming to around 12.67 million.
In the last 10 years the number of overnight stays by foreign visitors grew by 55.5 percent in 10 years.
Britain was a leader in the tourist number with 22.3 percent of guests while. German represented 13.6 percent, Spaniard 9.7 percent and French 9.5 percent.
Brazilian and North American tourists grew by a third in 2017. It was noted that Lisbon and the Algarve remained the biggest draws, accounting for 14.3 million and 19 million overnight stays respectively.
