Shaun White took over the Winter Olympics on Wednesday. Here's how

The 2018 Winter Olympics became the Shaun White show on Wednesday in Pyeongchang, as the American snowboarding star dubbed the "The Flying Tomato" captured his third career gold medal in men's halfpipe. 

White's dramatic victory, earning the United States a historic 100th gold medal, required him to land a combination of tricks he’d never done before on his third and final run. He did with the run of his life, cementing his status as one of the country's most clutch Winter Olympics performers ever.

While no one can argue with White's athletic achievements, his overall legacy is much more complicated and tarnished by the sexual harassment allegations against him. When asked post-event by media about the allegations brought forth by former band member Lena Zawaideh, whom White reached an undisclosed settlement with in 2017, White replied that he was there to talk about these Olympics and "not gossip." 

White went on the Today show Wednesday morning and apologized for calling the allegations "gossip" and said he has "grown as a person over the years."

Other medals you missed

Nordic combined: Eric Frenzel of Germany captured the gold in the men's Nordic combined with a time of 24:51.4. Akito Watabe of Japan and Lukas Klapfer of Austria finished second and third respectively with times of 24:56.2 and 25:09.5.

Speed skating: Another tough run for the Americans -- and more domination by the Dutch -- in the women's 1000-meter race. Jorien Ter Mors won the gold medal followed by Japan's Nao Kodaira and Miho Takai. Team USA's Brittany Bowe finished fourth. 

Luge: Germany's Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt won their second consecutive gold medal in the event with Austria's Peter Penz and Georg Fischler taking silver. Fellow Germans Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken took the bronze.
