BSMMU Pro-VC Zakaria Swapan passes away

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University or BSMMU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof ASM Zakaria Swapan passed away at the BSMMU Hospital in the capital.

 

The 54-year-old professor breathed his last around 11:45am at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital on Wednesday after a long battle with liver cancer.

 

A dermatologist, Swapan was in charge of the university’s educational affairs as one of the two pro-VCs.

 

Born in Mymensingh, he graduated from the Sir Salimullah Medical College in 1988, reports bdnews24.com.

 

Swapan served as the proctor of BSMMU between 2009 and 2015, before being appointed as a pro-VC in 2016.

 

He was the founding joint secretary general of the pro-Awami League doctors’ forum, the Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad and had also served as the general secretary of its BSMMU chapter.

 

The Bangladesh Medical Association or BMA, which Swapan had served as a member of the central body, has expressed condolence over the death.
