Born in 1933, Madhubala was known for her mesmerising beauty and her inherent style. Her admirers were countless, not specifically confined to any era or global boundary. Hindi films have enjoyed a universal status all over the world and this beauty has fan across the globe until today. Greece still worships the iconic beauty. Her popularity touched great heights in Greece in late 1950's and early 60's. She was referred to as the 'Venus of Indian Cinema'.

Today's generation may have all the exquisite heroines on screen with sculpted figures, spotless charm but Madhubala surpasses all with a certain charisma. Her life, her work and her tragedies have always made audience inquisitive about her. She still overwhelms magazine columns and cover photos over many stars of today. That's the magic of the queen of Indian cinema.

Madhubala's real name was Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi, she had such exquisite charm that film journalist BK Karanjia had once said that none of her published photographs did full justice to her extraordinary beauty. But nevertheless, the actress also had more stories under her beautiful cover, of her love life, her troubled marriage, and her films.

Dilip Kumar and Madhubala were love-smitten in those days, both were an inimitable pair and shared the same religious faith but things never materialised between the two. It is alleged that Ataullah Khan, Madhubala's father was responsible for their break-up.

Her relationship with Kishore Kumar consummated into an unhappy marriage.  Her declining health affected her mental well being. Madhubala had serious medical condition with a hole in the heart.

Her roles in some of the iconic films have left an indelible mark in the film industry. The legacy she left behind with her role as Anarkali in the classic film Mughal-e-Azam has no parallel. Her films include Mahal, Howrah Bridge, Mr and Mrs 55, Barsaat Ki Raat, amongst many. Songs in which she has been picturised still ring a bell into the hearts of her fans.

 "The ability of these heroines to express pain made the beautiful and haunting songs that they sang instant hits. It was only natural that the emotions of the poor Greeks would be expressed through those very same melodies," says Greek psychologist Dr Helen Abadzi.

Madhubala bid farewell to the world at the age of 36 in 1969. As we pay tributes to this immortal beauty, we unwind with her eternal song "Achha Ji Main Haari, Chalo Maan Jao Na'.
