It’s a model range that enters its 15th year this 2018. The first BMW X3 (E83) debuted to worldwide acclaim in 2003, and has since been supplanted by the second-gen version (F25) in 2010. The original X3 was more in line with European tastes—compact yet functional with a relatively high level of luxury and comfort features. It was made in Graz, Austria.

The second-gen X3 was slightly bigger and more luxurious—more on line with US tastes—and was manufactured in BMW’s Spartanburg facility in South Carolina (like its bigger X5 and X6 siblings).

And now, BMW unveils the all-new X3 (now code-named G01), still made in Spartanburg.

The all-new X3 elevates the already bold and dynamic design of its predecessor to a new, even more compelling form. The pioneering premium mid-size Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) treads a familiar BMW X family path combining rugged off-road looks with sporting presence.

The exterior dimensions of the all-new BMW X3 may be largely unchanged, but its 50mm-longer wheelbase, long hood and extremely short front overhang emphasizes the perfect 50:50 weight distribution—long a BMW bragging point—between the front and rear axles.

Two trim variants are available: the X3 xDrive20d xLine model with radiator grille and other exterior details in satin aluminium and specific 19-inch alloy wheels, and the X3 xDrive20d M Sport, which sports M aerodynamic features, more aggressive-looking 19-inch alloy wheels, and a new shade of Phytonic Blue.

The xLine model focuses on pureness and elegance, and is standard-fitted with full Vernasca leather upholstery sports seats. It also comes with décor stitching and interior trim strips in black high-gloss with highlight trim finishers in Pearl Chrome.

The M Sport model, on the other hand, provides an athletic visual showcase with an M Sport leather steering wheel, sports seats, anthracite-colored BMW Individual headliner and new interior trim strips in Aluminium Rhombicle in the interior.

Both variants come standard with a number of new, comfort-enhancing features not offered in its predecessor. These include three-zone automatic climate control, which adds separate temperature controls for the rear compartment, driver and front passenger. The standard acoustic glazing of the windshield contributes to the extremely low noise levels in the interior, even at high speeds.

To further improve the comfort level of the rear compartment, the angle of the standard 40:20:40 split/folding rear seat backrests can be adjusted individually. This feature also allows the backrests to be released remotely from the load compartment, which expands the standard load capacity of 550 to 1,600 liters.

In addition to the latest version of the BMW iDrive system fitted as standard, the Navigation system Professional opens up the touchscreen and gesture control – functions which have so far been exclusive to the current BMW 7 Series and new 5 Series. The 10.25” central display provides a quick summary of the most pertinent information, and offers users intuitive access to whatever they are looking for. Gesture control allows numerous infotainment system and telephone functions to be operated intuitively using finger and hand gestures.

Moreover, intelligent parking assistance systems ensure that every journey in the X3 is enjoyable, including parking. For instance, Parking Assistant makes parking easier as the system measures potential spaces while driving past at a low speed and aids the driver in steering, acceleration, braking, and gear selection to automatically position the car into parallel and lateral parking spaces.

The new X3 delivers an even sportier driving experience than its predecessor without compromising comfort. The vehicle will be available in xLine and M Sport trims from launch. Both are powered by a 2-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo diesel engine producing 190hp and 400Nm. The engine is mated to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission with gearshift paddles and BMW’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

Lowering the vehicle weight is a key factor in the efficiency and agility of the new X3. For this reason, intelligent lightweight design is integrated into all areas of development and encompasses every component. In addition to the inclusion of plastics and state-of the-art composites, the increased use of aluminum components in the engine and suspension has also reduced their weight. The new X3 is a full 55 kilograms lighter than its predecessor.

The all-new BMW X3 also boasts a class-leading drag coefficient of Cd = 0.29. Reducing aerodynamic drag not only helps to lower fuel consumption, it also has a beneficial effect of reducing wind noise. Besides its aerodynamically optimised proportions, the new BMW X3 also features additional underbody cladding that provides unprecedented underbody sealing. Further refinements, such as the restyled roof spoiler with aero edges at the sides, round off its aerodynamic superiority.

The all-new BMW X3 xDrive20d xLine is available at P4,390,000 while the BMW X3 xDrive20d M Sport is priced at P4,590,000.
