

CBI Arrests IT Official for Accepting Bribe in Odisha

New Delhi: An income tax official in Odisha was arrested after he was allegedly caught accepting a bribe from a petrol pump owner to not reopen an assessment matter, CBI officials said on Tuesday.
Niranjan Behera was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in Bhadrak on Monday night.
Searches at his residence on Tuesday led to Rs 2 lakh in cash and property documents being recovered, officials said.
Behera, who is in police custody, will be produced before the court for placing him in CBI custody, they said.
It is alleged that the official demanded Rs 50,000 as bribe from a petrol pump owner in Bhadrak district for not reopening his tax assessment issue, they said.
After verifying details of the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and arrested Behera while he was receiving Rs 40,000 of the Rs 50,000 bribe last night, they said.
