Security forces corner militants inside a house in Srinagar.

A constable was killed and one policeman injured, as paramilitary personnel foiled a fidayeen attack on the CRPF’s 23 Battalion headquarters in Srinagar on February 12.

CRPF spokesman Rajesh Yadav said constable Mujahid Khan of Bihar was hit in the initial fire when two militants, armed with AK-47s, tried to attack the camp around 4.30 a.m.

Sentry Raghunath Ghait, who spotted them, opened fire.

“The militants fled the spot after the sentry’s fire prevented them from entering the camp,” said Mr. Yadav.

Jammu and Kashmir Minister and government spokesman Abdul Rehman Veeri said that at 10 a.m., when a team was conducting a search in the area, it was fired upon near Gole Market, Karan Nagar. “The militants have been cornered in a house under construction,” he said.

The encounter with them was on late on Monday evening. The area, which has a hospital and the police headquarters nearby, was sealed.

One policeman was shot in the shoulder when the security forces tried to zero in on the building.

Five families evacuated

CRPF Inspector-GeneralRavideep Sahai said five families were evacuated from near the site. Security forces had to use teargas shells to disperse protesters trying to converge on the scene.

Meanwhile, two militants, including a local recruit of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, Owais Bashir Mir, died in north Kashmir’s Sopore.

“Mir was found injured while the other lay dead at the interior link road in Warpora. A motorcycle was lying near the body. Mir later succumbed to his injuries,” said the police.
