Power consumption to go up

The Tangedco expect demand for electricity to shoot up in the coming days.

Chief Engineer of Tangedco, Coimbatore Region, T. Haldorai, said the average demand is normally about 2,000 MW from Coimbatore, Tirupur, and the Nilgiris districts. During summer it peaks to 2,300 MW. On Monday it touched 2,200 MW.

Higher demand for electricity is mainly because of increase in use of air-conditioners during summer. The consumption usually starts shooting up from mid-March and remains high till mid-May, he added.

With State-level short-term power purchase agreements in place, the demand will be met during summer.

The Tangedco is taking steps to ensure that there is no breakdown of equipment due to soaring temperature, he said.

“We have asked field officials to monitor the equipment regularly and to ensure equal distribution of load when the demand increases,” he said.

S. Ravikumar, president of Coimbatore and Tirupur District Tiny and Micro Entrepreneurs Association, said last year industrial units did not face much of power cut. “This year too we are confident the situation will not turn worse. The peak hour consumption does not increase by micro units and the Tangedco should also ensure that there is no power cut during day time,” he said.
