Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandra Babu Naidu, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Punjab Chief Minister Amrinder Singh are the richest Chief Ministers while Manik Sarkar of Tripura, Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal and Mehbooba Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir are among the poorer Chief Ministers.
The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) on Monday released a report on chief ministers of 29 States and two Union Territories and how much properties or assets they held.
The BJP, which has Governments in 18 states, does not have a single Chief Minister in the top 10 list. Six out of the top ten richest CMs are from the Congress and the rest belong to the TDP, TRS, BJD and SDF. Out of 31 CMs in India, 25 are crorepatis (with assets exceeding Rs 1 crore). The ADR report is based on the analysis of affidavits filed by them before the Election Commission.
According to report, the average of assets per Chief Minister from State Assemblies and Union Territories is Rs 16.18 Crores. Out of the 31 Chief Ministers of State Assemblies and Union Territories analysed, 25 (81 percent) are crorepatis.
Two CMs have over Rs 100 crore and above, six Chief Ministers have Rs 10 crore to Rs 50 crore, 17 chief ministers have Rs 1 crore to
Rs 10 crore, while six chief ministers have less than Rs 1 crore.
As per report, AP Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Naidu topped the list of wealthiest CMs with assets valued at over Rs 177 crore while Sarkar who has assets valued just over Rs 26 lakh. Sarkar has moveable assets worth Rs 24.63 lakh and immovable assets worth Rs 2.20 lakh, making his total assets worth Rs 26.83 lakh.
He is followed on the "poorest CMs" list by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who has moveable assets worth Rs 30.45 lakh and no immovable assets whatsoever. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti is the third poorest CM with total assets worth Rs 55.96 lakh. Haryana CM Manoharlal Khattar (Rs 61.29 lakh) and Jharkhand CM Raghubar Das (Rs 72.72 lakh) are fourth and fifth respectively. Among the non-crorepatis, UP CM Yogi Adityanath is the richest with assets worth Rs 95.98 lakh. Adityanath is also the sixth-poorest CM in India.
The report says that out of 31 Chief Ministers, only 3 (10 percent) Chief Ministers are women. Eight (26 percent) chief ministers have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property, criminal intimidation, etc.
