An urban jungle surrounded by actual rainforests, Kuala Lumpur is home to incredibly diverse scenery. "When I think of Kuala Lumpur, the unique blend of cultures and lifestyles is what comes to mind," says Patrick Teow, a travel photographer and influencer based in the Malaysian capital. " We may not boast the latest cutting-edge technology or the most impressive architecture, but this interplay of colors and traditions — in a tightly-knitted urban setting — is what makes the city feel like home to me."
Inspired by the dynamic momentum of the destination and its many hidden facets, Uber and Canon have teamed up to spotlight a handful of its unusual locations that not even many locals have seen. After collecting a year's worth of data and scouting locations all over the city, Uber has identified three photogenic locations with the lowest drop-off requests on the app.
Three Kuala Lumpur-based Instagrammers have been tapped to explore these forgotten places. Off the beaten path they may be, they are by no means unremarkable, as proven by the gorgeous snapshots taken by these photographers with Canon's EOS M mirrorless camera series. These snapshots are shared on Uber and Canon's Instagram feeds under the hashtags #CanonxUber, #whereto and #hiddencities, imploring followers to seek similar moments of discovery and tap into uncharted areas of their own cities.
Ahead, unlock the enriching stories behind these under-appreciated locations to see Kuala Lumpur like you never have before.

Green city
You don't have to venture far out of the city to experience nature. This hidden forest is in close proximity from KL Tower, a popular architectural landmark. This jungle has been around for more than a century, making it one of the oldest natural reserves in Malaysia.

Juxtaposition
Here, rustling leaves, insect choruses, and chirping from exotic birds drown out the chaos of the city. However, a few skyscrapers can still be seen from the vantage of the jungle, creating a beautiful visual contrast. This beautiful visual contrast can be captured from a variety of locations from the park.
The 200-meters-long canopy walk is an experience that lends itself well to photography. The suspended wooden trail offers a panoramic view that has to be seen to be believed.

Instagram ready
This quiet alleyway has an enchanting look that wouldn't look out of place on a vintage postcard. Traditional shops and cafes line the street, all featuring colorful shutter panel windows accentuated by a string of bright red lanterns.
Vibrant walls make for beautiful photo backdrops, and Lorong Panggung is in no shortage of them. The pastel colors covering the buildings have a unique photogenic charm to them, thanks to decades of aging and greenery that has sprung up organically.

Best kept secrets
Make sure to come with an empty stomach on your trip to explore this picturesque little street, as you wouldn't want to miss out the hearty dishes at this quaint coffee shop: Standing tall for more than 60 years, the establishment is known for its eggs and toast breakfast.
“I loved how a photograph can be absolutely story telling or awe-inspiring,” says Syuhaida Zain, one of the influencers commissioned for the project. “For me, these hidden spots have their own history and sentimental value — you get a completely different vibe when you actually visit the places.”
Local seniors who frequent the stall have a fantastic flair for fashion and often dress themselves in colorful patterns. A snapshot of them going about their day is one of those images that can instantly tell you about the character of a neighborhood.

Hit the streets
Street art is prime photography fodder in most cities, so it's surprising that this abandoned building is one of the least-requested destinations on Uber. Eclectic graffiti designs adorn the timeworn walls, which date back to the year 1931.

Looking back
"Abandoned spots have a special place in my heart as they represent the collective memory and experience of people who used to occupy them," says Teow. "Exploring abandoned places and attempting to imagine and to relive those glorious past with my camera is a very intriguing experience."
Formerly a residence for the upper echelon during the colonial era, the building has largely fallen into disrepair. The iconic KL Tower can be spotted from this hidden gem — a unique testament to its old-meets-new character.
Try angling your camera so the skyscraper can be captured within the frame, so the interesting aspect of old-meets-new will be front and center.
