LOWER PROVIDENCE >> The Super Bowl bet was about as friendly as it gets.

Two bakeries, two signature items and two hefty donations to charity were on the line.

In the end, of course, both the Philadelphia Eagles and Collegeville Italian Bakery Pizzeria Napoletana came out on top.

On Saturday, Montilio’s Baking Company & Pizzeria of Boston delivered to the Lower Providence icon known for tomato pies, chicken wings and other goodies one of its own specialties, a yellow and chocolate sheet cake, but decorated in a fashion that the New England Patriots-boosting bakery had never done before.

It was all done up with the Eagles logo and in Eagles green.

“Since the Eagles won the Super Bowl the bakery made us this beautiful Eagles cake and wrote a check to our charity, which was the School District of Philadelphia,” noted Steve Carcarey, who owns Collegeville Italian Bakery Pizzeria Napoletana with his wife Patrizia.

“We’re known for our tomato pies and they’re known for their sheet cakes, so the wager was simple, but we wanted to beef it up a little bit. So if they had won they would get a tomato pie with a Patriots logo and a $500 check to the charity of their choice.”

The victory cake and check were hand-delivered by Montilio’s Eric Clark, Steve noted.

“He drove from Massachusetts to bring them to us on Saturday. They have family in this area, so they have some Patriots fans and some Eagles fans. Unfortunately, a rep from the school district could not be with us, but someone did come to accept the check on Sunday.”

Patrizia noted: “We told people in advance that the cake would be here and it turned into an Eagles celebration. It was a nice huge cake and served over 100 people. I would do it all again,” she added, “if it meant the Eagles would win the Super Bowl.”

The bet came about through one of Collegeville Bakery’s regular customers, who just happens to be a popular sports radio host.

“Montilio’s had reached out to Glen Macnow of WIP, who is one of our customers. They wanted to have a friendly wager against a bakery in Philadelphia and he recommended us,” Steve explained. “This was really just a nice way to give back to our customers.
