When a plea by Hindu Makkal Munnani, which alleged that Bharathiraja's remarks on Lord Vinayaka amounted to trigger violence in the society, came up for hearing, justice Ramesh said the police can file a case against him, provided there is prima facie case has been made.
In his petition, V G Narayanan of the Hindu outfit alleged that during a speech to support to lyricist Vairamuthu in the Andal row, Bharathiraja had spoken ill of Lord Ganesha and also threatened Hindus with dire consequences.
He said that though his party filed a complaint with the Vadapalani police, there was no action on it, which prompted him to approach the court. Bharathiraja, a close friend of Vairamuthu, came in support of the lyricist, who faced stiff opposition from Hindu outfits for his comments on goddess Andal, the only woman Alvar saint, in his article in a newspaper. He said they would be forced to take weapons if the attacks against Vairamuthu continued. These remarks triggered a controversy.
