A flight of United Airlines was capable of making an absolutely safe landing on Tuesday in Honolulu after an engine cover suddenly came off while it was in the midst of a flight from San Francisco, according to the airline.
In a statement, United mentioned that their pilots had followed all necessary protocols to land the airplane safely.
It then added that all passengers departed the Boeing 777 normally at the gate.
Thereafter the airline landed as emergency responders waited nearby according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation spokesman Tim Sakahara.
Flight 1175 was travelling to Honolulu from San Francisco.
Images posted on various social media portray an engine with the exterior cover missing as the airplane approached Honolulu. Video shows the engine shaking back and forth as pieces of the cover flapped in the wind.
An emergency was declared on account of a vibration in the right engine as per spokesman Ian Gregor of Federal Aviation Administration who mentioned this in an email and he also specified that the agency would investigate the incident.
