The #MosqueMeToo movement was initiated by an Egyptian-American feminist and journalist Mona Eltahawy who first shared her experience of sexual harassment during Haj in 2013.
"A few years ago, I began sharing that I was sexually assaulted during Haj. I wrote about it in my book in 2015. It is hard to talk about assault in sacred spaces.I hope all of us who are speaking can be of help to those who for whatever reason can’t speak right now," the crusader Mona Eltahawy said in a tweet.
Eltahawy shared these horrible incidents via a twitter thread. The scary experience is also mentioned in her book, Headscarves & Hymens.
Within hours of Eltahawy tweet, a wave of such horrific incidents flooded the social networking platform under the trending hashtag.
A similar campaign #MeToo hit Twitter following allegations of sexual harassment by the movie tycoon, Harvey Weinstein by actresses.
