Dejected over alleged delay in getting justice on his petition pending before the court, a 62-year-old man attempted to immolate himself on the district court premises here on Monday.

Police sources said D. Edward Savarimuthu of Krishnapuram near Palayamkottai had extended a loan of ₹1 lakh to one Dasan of Valliyoor in 2010. When the borrower gave a cheque for ₹1 lakh, it bounced for lack of funds in his account, forcing Edward Savarimuthu to file a case in the court. The trial is pending before court.

Meanwhile, Dasan, who had repaid ₹59,000 to Edward Savarimuthu, passed away six months ago, even as the case was being adjourned repeatedly.

When the case was again adjourned on Monday, an agitated Edward Savarimuthu came out of the court and doused himself with petrol in an apparent attempt to immolate himself. However, the advocates and the police personnel standing nearby thwarted his attempt and poured water on him.

Palayamkottai police arrested Edward Savarimuthu for attempting to commit suicide, and enlarged him on bail later.

The State’s health helpline 104 provides anti-suicide counselling and Chennai-based Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline is 044-24640050.
