Cooperative societies will be set up for the transgender community, Minister for Cooperation Kadakampally Surendran has said. He was speaking at the eighth Cooperative Congress in Kannur on Sunday.
Mr. Surendran said the decision took forward the State government’s welfare schemes for improving the social status of transgenders. Financial aid for the transgender community would be dispensed through the societies.
This was the first time in India that cooperative societies were being formed for them. The societies would help find self-employment for the transgenders, the Minister said. The societies would first come up in districts that would muster the required number of members as per the Cooperatives Societies Act.
