World War Two bomb found in Thames, London City Airport closes

london city airportLondon City Airport has been shut down after a World War Two bomb was discovered in the River Thames.

 

The airport would be closed throughout the day and all the flights have been cancelled owing to this incident that has impacted 16,000 passengers as asserted by a spokeswoman. The bomb was discovered around 5.00 GMT on Sunday at George V Dock during pre-planned work at the airport in east London according to the Met Police.

 

This airport was closed around 22.00 and the Met mentioned that it had been working with the Royal Navy to remove the device.

 

And, the passengers have been advised not to travel to the airport since the terminal is shut down and that they should contact their helpline instead. Robert Sinclair who is the CEO of the airport apologized and said that they were sorry for the extreme inconvenience caused to the passengers, particularly some of their local residents.

 

Airlines utilizing London City Airport include Flybe, British Airways. CityJet, KLM, Lufthansa and there are flights to domestic and European city destinations.

 

Police mentioned that a 214-metre exclusion zone was established and properties were evacuated with Newham Council offering temporary emergency accommodation to residents.

 

Police said that many road cordons were in place and advised motorists to avoid the area.

 

Docklands Light Railway services between the airport and Woolwich Arsenal have also been suspended. Passengers have leveraged social media to express their frustration after the closure.

 

Last year over 4.5 million passengers had utilized London City Airport.

 

An expansion worth £400 million was granted a go-ahead by ministers in July 2016 that includes extending the terminal. Two million more passengers would be able to use the airport from 2025, with 30,000 additional flights annually, as mentioned by the airport.
