To ensure safety of passengers, the Centre for Railway Information systems (CRIS) will install SOS buttons, which will be operated by the motorman of the train to tackle emergencies.
A Hindustan Times report stated that the motorman can press the SOS button in cases of accidents, sending an immediate alert to control room as well as other motormen boarding the trains on the same track as the affected train.
Alongwith the SOS button, a Real Time Information System (RTIS) software will be installed that will facilitate the sharing of information about the train in real time.
The pan-India plan will allow commuters to track the position of local as well as outstation trains in real time through a mobile application.
“The trial and testing of the real time update has been done and will be inducted soon. The SOS system will be integrated with the real time system,” said Uday Bobhate, General manager, CRIS told the paper.
The move is likely to reduce the time taken to send accidents alerts. As of now, during emergencies, the motorman or the guard of the train has to manually inform the station manager or a railway official at the nearest railway station.
