London City Airport has been been shut down after an unexploded World War II bomb was discovered in the nearby River Thames.

The ordnance was discovered in King George V Dock on Sunday during pre-planned work at the airport. Specialist officers and the Royal Navy are attending to the device and have confirmed that the device was explosive.

In a series of tweets, the London City Airport announced its closure and advised passengers to contact their airline before travelling. It is likely that some disruption to inbound and outbound flights will be caused during the operation.

A 214 metre exclusion zone has been implemented as a precaution. The decision was taken "to ensure that the ordnance can be safely dealt with whilst limiting any risk to the public," police said in a statement.

The Metropolitan police said it was working with the Royal Navy to deal with the situation.
