Much work has been done in organic farming in the last few years in Madhya Pradesh. According to Agriculture and Processed Food Product Export Development Authority (APEDA) currently, organic farming is being done in nearly 5.75 lakh hectare area.
More than 40 per cent organic agricultural products are being produced in the State which is about 40 per cent of the total organic agricultural produce of the country.Organic farming has been adopted in over 1800 villages of 313 blocks in the State.
To boost organic farming, organic agriculture policy was implemented in the year 2011 in Madhya Pradesh.
Ever since, organic farming has been on the rise. Vocational organisation ASSOCHAM conducted a survey in State in which it was told that there is possibility of export of organic products worth `600 crore in the next five years in State.
The Sharbati wheat grown in Vidisha, Sagar and Sehore of Madhya Pradesh, durum wheat of Malwa region, Arhar dal grown organically in Hoshangabad and Narsinghpur district of Narmada plateau is in demand all over the country. Kodo-Kutki of Mandla and Dindori district and Baigani dal is in much demand in the international market.
The demand for Basmati rice of Raisen, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Mandla and Balaghat and organic cotton of Nimar and Malwa is not only high in the country but abroad also.
An Organic Research Centre is being set up in Mandla to provide information of new researches in organic farming.
Separate arrangements have been made by the Department of Farmer Welfare and Agriculture Development in the selected krishi upaj mandis for sale of organic products.
