#Zexit: The remaining option

12 February 2018, 10:26

Cyril Ramaphosa's Zexit tactics were wrong from the beginning.

Zuma should have been offered certain options and been told then already which of his own demands would not even be considered or discussed. Also, there should have been a clear deadline for him to accept his fate or face certain less pleasant consequences.

If his demands should be conceded, as an example, to be allowed state coverage of all later legal expenses, he could use the legal system for appeal after appeal ad infinitum.

It would cost the taxpayer billions, never bring closure, and disrupt our normal political life. But it is not too late. The remaining options to counter his intransigence should now be introduced as a matter of extreme and ruthless urgency.

No more pussy-footing to give him a benign exit for he has spat in the face of a soft, humane approach.
