Pro-Tem Speaker gets jail
Gandhinagar : The pro-tem Speaker of the newly-installed Gujarat Legislative Assembly, Nimaben Acharya was pronounced guilty in a nine-year-old case and sentenced to one year in jail and a penalty of Rs 2000.
The case refers to Parliamentary polls of 2009 in Morbi constituency of Saurashtra region, wherein Nimaben had gone to campaign for the then BJP candidate, along with then BJP legislator from Morbi Kantibhai Amrutiya and Manoj Panara, who is convenor for Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti.
The court in Morbi pronounced all 3 guilty of acting in violation of Election Code of Conduct and sentenced each of them to one year jail term and Rs 2000 in financial penalty. The magistrate, later gave a stay on the judgment and 30 days’ time for the convicted to approach a higher court to appeal.
