Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was awarded a $5 million award for African leaders who relinquish power after elections, becoming the first winner after several years where no one was deemed worthy of the prize.
The committee for the Mo Ibrahim award praised Ms. Sirleaf, who steered Liberia from the ruins of a devastating 14-year civil war and stepped down in January after serving two six-year terms.
