Mehbooba pitches for talks with Pakistan

JAMMU: Two days after Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists targeted sleeping families at Sunjuwan military camp here in which five Army personnel and a civilian were killed, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday demanded resumption of talks with Pakistan to end violence in the state.

Addressing the assembly here on Monday, Mehbooba made a pitch for talks with Pakistan even as another operation against Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists, who attacked a CRPF camp in Srinagar, was on.

“If Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti say hold talks with Pakistan, they are dubbed anti-national,” she said, adding that there was no alternative to resolve the Kashmir issue except dialogue. “Wonder what some media houses would have called Atalji (former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee) if he took the bus to Lahore in today’s time and talked of a dialogue?” she added.

Mehbooba also took to Twitter to send her message across. “Dialogue with Pakistan is necessary if we are to end bloodshed. I know I will be labelled anti-national by news anchors tonight but that doesn’t matter. The people of J&K are suffering. We have to talk because war is not an option,” Mehbooba wrote on Twitter.

At a function outside the assembly, she said, “If we (the Kashmiris) don't talk about it (dialogue), who will? Not a Bihari, not a Punjabi.” The CM said that four wars were fought with Pakistan and India had won all of them. “But even now, there is no solution other than dialogue. Till when will our jawans and civilians keep dying?” she added.
