Dharwad: Of the total 2,400 cases admitted, 407 were settled at the
National Lok Adalat held at the district court here. While 332 cases were settled through arbitration, 75 were done so at the pre-litigation stage, said principal district and sessions judge Ramachandra Huddar, under whose chairmanship the Lok Adalat was held. He stated that 19 petitioners in 14 cases were given a compensation of Rs 28.69 lakh following decree at the Lok Adalat.
Huddar said that the Lok Adalat is handy in settling long-drawn disputes through mediation, ensuring that the aggrieved party is given compensation the same day. As
road accidents are on the rise,
cases under the Motor Vehicles Act too are increasing. The Lok Adalat is the best platform to settle such disputes and reduce
pendency at lower courts, he said.
The
Legal Services Authority has taken up this new measure of holding regular Lok Adalats so that the petitioner need not wait for years to get justice. The petitioner and the opposite parties should be enlightened on the scope for Lok Adalat, said the judge. Lower court judges, representatives of insurance companies, panel advocates,
NWKRTC officials and petitioners took part in the Lok Adalat.
