First TV, now CPU stolen from State police headquarters

A theft in the ‘highly secure’ State police headquarters in the city — the second in less than a year — left the force red in the face. This time around, the thieves made off with a central processing unit, mouse and keyboard from the fourth floor clerical station on Tuesday night. In April 2017, a 22-inch LED TV installed outside the conference hall of the DGP office was stolen.

According to police officers, the equipment was taken from the section that handled personnel’s pension. “The thieves are making a mockery of the security system in place,” said a police officer.

Complaint filed

In a complaint filed by Narasimhamurthy, in-charge public relation officer, the office was secure at 7.15 p.m. on Tuesday when the last personnel left for the day. “The first division assistant on duty had locked the office. There were no confidential files,” he said.

No forced entry

What’s telling though, it is there were no signs of a forced entry, said sources. The police suspect that it was an inside job. “It is impossible for outsiders to walk into the headquarters and walk out with a CPU, a keyboard and a mouse,” said a senior police officer. “The thief escaped despite security personnel guarding the premises round the clock. This is very embarrassing as it is the second theft to have taken place at the office of the Director General and Inspector General of Police office,” he added.

Following the April 2017 theft of an LED TV, a special team had been formed to probe the case. Clerical, maintenance and even security staff were questioned and suspects were handed over to the jurisdictional Ulsoor Gate police. However, the police are yet to make any breakthrough.
