The citywide Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) network helped the MIDC police recover a key, which was accidentally dropped by a jewellery firm executive in an autorickshaw, within a day of it being lost.
According to the MIDC police, Lokendra Jain, an accounts manager for Sitara Jewellery, a firm in SEEPZ, boarded an auto from the MIDC area in Andheri for his workplace, which he reached at around 9 a.m. on Thursday. After getting off, he realised that he did not have the key to the company safe, which contained valuables worth around ₹10 lakh.
He suspected he might have dropped it in the autorickshaw and informed the MIDC police.
“We scanned footage from several CCTV cameras covering the SEEPZ area, with special focus on the cameras covering Gate No. 3 where Mr Jain got off,” Senior Police Inspector Shailesh Pasalwad, MIDC police station said.
Mr. Jain also viewed the CCTV feed along with the police to help in identification.
“I saw myself in the footage, getting off the auto, and pointed out to the police. They used the license plate number to obtain registration details from the Regional Transport Office,” he said.
The police then called up the autorickshaw driver, who was at his Borivali residence.
Officers said he had found the key in his back seat and had kept it with him, not knowing who it belonged to. He went to the police station on Friday morning to hand over the key, after which it was returned to Mr. Jain.
