Superstar Rajinikanth's Kaala has been confirmed to hit the theatres on 27 April, the date on which Shankar's 2.0 was initially slated to release. Dhanush, who has co-produced the film with Subaskaran Allirajah's Lyca Productions, announced the release date of Kaala with an official poster featuring Rajinikanth.

Kaala marks the second consecutive collaboration of director Pa Ranjith and Rajinikanth after their previous film Kabali, which was bankrolled by Kalaipuli S Thanu. Rajinikanth will be seen playing the role of a slum lord-turned-gangster who fights against the oppression of Tamils in Mumbai. In the film, which is billed as a gangster drama, Rajinikanth is pitted against actor Nana Patekar who plays the role of a deadly politician.
"Although Shankar has been working round the clock with the post-production of 2.0, the CGI portions are taking longer than expected. Since VFX studios across the globe have been entrusted with creating the graphics, the makers were finding it difficult to release the film on 27 April as announced earlier. Hence, they discussed with Dhanush and Ranjith and decided mutually to advance the release date of Kaala to take advantage of the May Day weekend," a source from the team told Firstpost, adding that Lyca has still not decided anything on the release date of 2.0.
Now, the post-production work of Kaala is going on in full swing. The dubbing for the supporting cast is already underway and Rajinikanth is also expected to complete dubbing his portions before the end of this month. Santhosh Narayanan, who is composing for his second Rajinikanth film after Kabali, has started working on the songs and re-recording already. "Since the theme track of Kabali was a chartbuster hit, Ranjith and Santhosh are planning to deliver another repeat-worthy theme score for Kaala to ensure it reaches everyone across the board," the source told.
Also starring Huma Qureshi, Samuthirakani, Anjali Patil, Pankaj Tripathi, Sampath, Eswari Rao, Sayaji Shinde and Sakshi Aggarwal in pivotal roles, Kaala will be presented by Lyca Productions in Tamil Nadu. The makers are planning to hold the audio launch of the film next month in a grand event. Master editor Sreekar Prasad is taking care of the editing department and lensman Murali G, has handled the cinematography.
Meanwhile, rumors are rife in K-town that Rajinikanth could join forces with Ranjith for a hard-hitting political drama, marking their third successive collaboration. How Kaala fares at the boxoffice and Rajinikanth's plans for his political journey could be the deciding factor for the duo's next association, if any.
