Auto Expo 2018: Mercedes Concept EQ Showcased. The Mercedes Concept EQ heralded the arrival of Merc's EQ electric vehicle sub-brand when it debuted at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. The Concept EQ has been showcased at numerous auto shows all over the world since its debut and has since spawned a smaller concept in the form of the EQA concept which was unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Powering the Concept EQ is a set of motors - one on each wheel - which in tandem produce a total of 402bhp allowing the concept car to sprint from 0-100kph in under 5 seconds. The battery pack that provides the motors with power allow the Mercedes Concept EQ to run for 500 kilometres on a single charge. The battery also offers fast charging which adds 160km of range in just 5 minutes.
The Mercedes Concept EQ sits on a new platform that will also underpin other electric vehicles from Mercedes EQ electric car sub-brand. The EQA concept from the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show despite being smaller than the Concept EQ also sits on the same platform thanks to the modularity of the electric vehicle architecture.
In terms of design, the Mercedes EQ concept looks contemporary and futuristic at the same time with its lit up front grille and sleek LED headlights. The sides are bereft of any OVRMs which have been replaced by cameras, while the door handles are hidden as are the windshield wipers up front. Also seen are the large alloy wheels which feature a unique design.
The interior of the Mercedes Concept EQ is dominated by a 24-inch widescreen touchscreen display that gives readouts for speed, navigation and range among many others. There are smaller touchscreen displays on two of the three arms of the steering wheel and in between the front seats. The displays on the steering wheel allow the driver to control the larger widescreen display and access menus.
DriveSpark's Thoughts On The Mercedes Concept EQ At Auto Expo 2018
The Mercedes Concept EQ heralded the German automotive giant's push into the world of electric cars. If Mercedes manages to retain the design and the range of the Concept EQ in the production car, which is currently being tested, then Elon Musk's Tesla will have a real fight on their hands from their former backers.
