Delhi Police's special cell has written to head offices of WhatsApp and Facebook for detailed conversations between two Pakistani agents and Indian Air Force (IAF) Group Captain Arun Marwah, who was arrested on Wednesday on charges of espionage.
Marwah was allegedly seduced on Facebook by two agents posing as women and he used WhatsApp to pass on sensitive information to them. According to a top source in Delhi Police, Marwah has deleted most of his chats and it may now be difficult to know their exact content. Police are also facing hurdles due to the software used by Pakistani agents to hide their location.
"The Pakistani agents possibly used a software called TOR to hide their IP address. TOR has special features of rerouting IP addresses from multiple countries before reaching to the person who was targeted for chatting or exchanging text," an official told Mail Today.
Marwah, who was posted in IAF, Delhi, used his position and reach in the force after being blackmailed by Pakistani agents. He allegedly used his mobile to click pictures of classified documents and of other planning and exercise details. He then sent those to Pakistani handlers on WhatsApp and Facebook.
Marwah's phone has been sent to a forensic lab for data recovery. He was in contact with ISI agents since December last year and shared details of IAF exercises scheduled between March and June this year.
The intelligence wing is also scanning Whatsapp and Facebook accounts of other officials who may also have been honey-trapped by the ISI and forced to share details of defence operations. Some IAF officials posted in Delhi are under the scanner and might be called for questioning.
"Officers using Chinese smartphones are particularly under the radar. Those visiting porn sites or befriending women using various social media and clicking on links on these sites are also being monitored closely," the official said.
Meanwhile, police froze all of Marwah's bank accounts.
Trapping Marwah is said to be handwork of ISI agents Sajid and Abid Rana, and their group members, including some women, who used to chat with Marwah on social media by posing as models. They used fake accounts in the names of Kiran Randhawa and Mahima Patel to lure him.
