Even as the Corporation goes about improving its waste collection initiative, it has in association with NGOs ICLEI and Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore, embarked on Shunya zero waste project in Wards 22 and 24. It had already implemented the project in Ward 23.

Sources say in Ward 22, the volunteers involved in the Shunya project have created awareness among residents on Bharathi Park Cross Roads 6, 7 and 8 and Alagesan Road and removed bins. The conservancy workers will collect waste only in segregated fashion from the residents and handover only the wet waste to the Corporation.

They will further segregate the dry waste in to various recyclable materials and sell those to pocket the money.

Likewise, in Ward 24, the Shunya project is under way on Father Randy Street and West Sambandam Street, where too the Corporation has removed the bins. In the coming weeks, the volunteers will cover other streets in the wards so as to completely remove the bins. It will result in littering as well, the sources add.
