Tamil film celebrities on Sunday held a walk in Chennai to create awareness about the issue of domestic and sexual violence against women. The campaign titled 'Walk a Mile in Her Shoes - Stop violence against Women' was led by actor Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. Cricketer VR Vanitha, inspirational speaker Neerja Malik, actors Sarathkumar, Siddharth and Bigg Boss Tamil fame contestants Bindhu Madhavi and Harish Kalyan all extended their support to the event.
The entire proceedings of the walk will go to the women victims of violence, said Varalaxmi. "Plz guys every single person can make a difference by being there tomm.. proceeds of the walk will go to the victims of domestic violence and sexual assaults against women..!! Plz come and support us.. Be the change you wanna see..!! #Saveshakti..!!(sic)," she tweeted while seeking the support of the public.
Actors Sarathkumar and Siddharth flagged off 'Walk a Mile in Her Shoes' event at Westin hotel in Chennai's Velachery. Sarathkumar, who is Varalaxmi's father, for years women have been suffering domestic violence quietly. And he said it was everyone's responsibility to create awareness to keep the menace in check. "I was pleased to extend my support to create awareness on violence against women through "Walk a mile in her shoes" campaign initiated by women's league and #SaveSakthi," he tweeted later.
Actor Siddharth, who is also a good friend of Varalaxmi, walked the mile along with the other participants.
All the participants, including celebrities and members of the public, took part in 'Walk a Mile in Her Shoes' wearing a uniform red T-shirt and a cap.
The event was part of the 'Save Shakti’ campaign that was launched by Varalaxmi in 2017. The mission is to encourage women to reports instances of sexual harassment and seek justice.
