PUNE: Posing as a customer, a man diverted the attention of a shop assistant and made off with five smartphones, worth Rs1.25 lakh, from a mobile phone shop on
Fergusson College Road on Saturday.
Tanaji Patsute (28), who was manning store at the time, has lodged a complaint with the Deccan Gymkhana police.
On Friday afternoon, the suspect visited the mobile shop and told the complainant that he was staying at a hotel on FC Road, and wanted to purchase five smartphones for his friends. "He selected the phones and told Patsute that he would come on Saturday for the phones," assistant inspector Amol
Devkar said.
Around 11am on Saturday, the returned to the shop, asked the complainant to deliver the phones to the hotel and said he would pay for the phones upon delivery.
The complainant himself took the five smartphones and went along with the man to the hotel. "At the hotel, the man told Patsute that he would show the phones to his friends and asked him to wait on the hotel's premises," Devkar said.
When the suspect never came back, Patsute checked with the hotel and discovered that there was no such person staying there. "We are checking CCTV footage from the shop to ascertain the identity of the suspect," Devkar further said.
