The drive of Dehradun police against bootleggers yielded result on Saturday when it confiscated 300 cases of illicit liquor and some weapons from smugglers. Addressing newsmen at her office on Saturday, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Dehradun Nivedita Kukreti said that all the police stations of border areas were in state of alert after intelligence reports that liquor smugglers are active as festival of Holi is near. She said that as part of the drive the In-charge of Prem Nagar police station, Mukesh Tyagi was checking vehicles at Jhajhara on Saturday. On being suspicious the police team signalled a truck to stop but the driver of the truck sped away. A car accompanying the truck also tried to evade the police team. When the police party gave a chase and tried to stop the vehicles one of the bootleggers pointed a country made pistol on it.
The police however overpowered smugglers. The team later found 300 cases of liquor neatly stacked in the truck. Kukreti said that the body of truck was designed in such a manner so that it can easily hide the liquor. Two Khukheris (lances) and a country made fire arm was recovered from their possession.
On interrogation the liquor smugglers revealed that the consignment was meant to be taken to Rishikesh and adjoining mountainous regions.
