Eagles run to 1st Super Bowl championship means big bucks for local businesses
Bill Daley sat behind his desk in an unusually quiet moment in a basement office at Barnaby’s of America in Havertown as he paused for a moment recently basking in the afterglow of the Philadelphia Eagles season and its impact on his establishments. “Unbelievable,” he said with an enormous grin that spread from ear to ear. “There’s two things that people love – the Eagles and Barnaby’s.”
Funding approved for troubled Baltimore Pike-Newark Road intersection
Gov. Tom Wolf announced that 45 highway, bridge, bike and pedestrian, and ports and waterways projects, including $2 million for improvements to the Baltimore Pike/Newark Road intersection in New Garden Township, will benefit communities in 22 counties through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Multimodal Transportation Fund.
Pennsylvania OKs medical marijuana dispensary in Phoenixville
Gov. Tom Wolf Friday announced the Pennsylvania Department of Health approved medical marijuana dispensaries in Chester and Lancaster counties to begin operations, bringing the statewide total to eight. Cure Pennsylvania in Phoenixville; and Cure Pennsylvania in Lancaster, have passed all Department of Health inspections and can begin operations. Patients will be able to purchase medical marijuana at these locations once it is available.
10 Republicans have expressed interest in U.S. Rep. Pat Meehan’s seat, including an attorney from Radnor
Ten Republicans have expressed interest in the seat held by U.S. Patrick Meehan, R-7, of Chadds Ford, including a female former U.S. Assistant District Attorney from Radnor. The Delaware County Republican Party will host its Nominating Committee Monday night and anticipates nominating a candidate to run on the GOP ballot for the 7th Congressional District position. Meehan, who has held the seat for four terms, has decided not to seek re-election following a controversy that erupted Jan. 20 surrounding a taxpayer-funded payment to a former staff member while he was serving on the House Ethics Committee.
Montgomery Township pot grower says sentence ‘harsh and excessive’
A Montgomery Township man sent to prison for having a marijuana growing operation at his brother’s Springfield Township home calls his sentence “harsh and excessive” and wants a judge to reduce it. Tyree Lamar Bigelow, 31, of the 100 block of Hanover Street, asked Montgomery County Judge Thomas C. Branca to reconsider the 4-to-8-year prison term he imposed against Bigelow earlier this week.
Montgomery County sheriff rounds up alleged child support scofflaws
Eight men who collectively owed more than $61,000 in child support arrearages for nine children were awakened by Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies early Friday for a trip to see a judge. A team of deputies, including a K9 unit, took the men into custody during an overnight sweep of parents who allegedly failed to pay child support or did not show up for domestic relations hearings and who collectively owed $61,191.44 in child support, according to county Sheriff Sean P. Kilkenny.

There was something different as Villanova set up on defense early in the second half of Saturday’s 86-75 Big East victory over a Butler team that had won the last three meetings between the teams. And it didn’t take long for many in the season-high crowd of 20,603 at the Wells Fargo Center to notice the change.
Sixers Notebook: Embiid gets tangled up, but ‘feels great’
For a moment Saturday, the 76ers had to collectively hold their breath. They weren’t alone. “I think me and about 20,000 people held our breaths for the entire time,” the Sixers’ T.J. McConnell said. That’s because Joel Embiid appeared to have twisted his right knee midway through the fourth quarter of the Sixers’ 112-98 win over the LA Clippers. Embiid described it as his hand “getting tangled inside my leg as I was reaching for the ball and nothing happened. I feel great.”
