New Delhi, Feb 10: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that our Army is doing its job effectively and they won’t let our countrymen down. Suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists have carried out an attack at the Sunjuwan Army camp in the Jammu city. One Junior Commissioned Officers (JCO) has been martyred and six others, including women and children, were injured in the operation.

Singh further said that it would not be appropriate for him to comment on the attack on an Army camp in Jammu as the operation was still on.

Indian Army has released a statement on the attack, “In the early hours today after a brief exchange of fire with the sentry on the periphery, some terrorists entered the family accommodation complex in Sunjuwan military camp. The Quick Response Teams have cordoned off the area and isolated the terrorists, who are holed up in a few houses.” (Updates on Sunjuwan Camp Attack)

“In operations to evacuate families, so far one JCO has been martyred while six persons including three women and children have suffered injuries. Due to the presence of women and children in housing colony, the operations are being progressed cautiously to minimize casualties,” Statement further added.

Singh earlier spoke to the chief of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and took stock of the situation. During the telephonic conversation, he sought details from Director General of Police S P Vaid on the militant attack, according to a tweet by the Home Minister’s Office.

“The DGP has apprised him of the situation. The MHA is closely monitoring the situation,” the tweet read.

Sunjuwan Army Camp, strategically located on a Srinagar-Jammu-Pathankot highway, is surrounded by dense population. It has hundred of quarters for the families of the Armymen.

Intelligence inputs had warned an attack on the army or security establishment in view of the fifth death anniversary of Afsal Guru on February 9.
