Baleswar missile debris mishap: NHRC notice to SP

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)  issued summons on February 6 last to the Baleswar District Superintendent of Police (SP) for personal appearance before the commission on March 23 next regarding the falling of parts of a missile from a fighter plane on December 31, 2016 in which some villagers were injured in the district.

Earlier, Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain had filed a petition before the NHRC alleging that due to falling of parts of a missile from the plane, three residents of Chematata in Baleswar district, Padmabati, Sameer and Rakhi suffered serious burn injuries. Swain prayed to the commission to take criminal action against the public authorities by filling a case with police and compensate Rs 5 lakh each to the victims and provide free medical treatment to them.

The NHRC had also sought an action taken report from the concerned authorities, following which a report was submitted by Under Secretary to Government of India which stated that a court of inquiry was ordered by the Air Force.
