Panaji: Congress leader Chandrakant Kavlekar, who is also the Leader of Opposition, has sought more time to reply to questions by the Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) of the Goa Police in connection with a disproportionate assets case against him.
A senior ACB official told The Hindu that Mr. Kavlekar, who appeared before them after dodging previous summons, was questioned for nearly three hours on Friday.
The disproportionate assets case was filed by the ACB last year against him and his wife Savitri, who is also a senior Mahila Congress leader.
Before entering the police premises this morning Mr. Kavlekar said he was innocent and would cooperate with the investigation. “I have always said that the charges against me are false,” he added.
He was summoned by the ACB on Monday, but skipped it saying he was busy. A trial court has granted him interim relief from arrest till February 12.
The FIR filed against Mr. Kavlekar and his wife Savitri accuses the duo of purchasing properties in Kerala between January 2007 and April 2013, during which Mr. Kavlekar held the post of chairman of the Goa Industrial Development Corporation(GIDC), State-owned industry promotion body on three occasions.
The Goa Small Industries Association, a body representing medium and small industry, had charged him of committing large-scale irregularities related to allotment of industrial plots when he was chairman of the GIDC.
