Thanks to #MeToo campaign, many women are finally coming out to share about their sexual assault cases. #MeToo campaign led to many other campaigns like #MeNoToo among others and now another campaign named #MosqueMeToo has taken the internet by storm. With the help of the campaign, many women are speaking about their experiences of sexual abuse that took place at Hajj. It all started when Sabica Khan, a Pakistani woman, posted her horrid account on Facebook and soon she found that she was not the only victim at Hajj. She revealed how she was assaulted next to the Kaaba, the structure at the center of Islam’s most holy mosque in Saudi Arabia.

Sabica also said that she had been touched by many men while performed tawaf- a compulsory rite of the pilgrimage. The post went viral and soon Egyptian- American journalist named Mona Eltahawy also shared her story and started the hashtag on Twitter and soon it became one of the trending topics. And the hashtag also became one of the top ten trends of Farsi Twitter. Many started using the hashtag and more than 2000 tweets related to sexual harassment incidents that took place in holy places filled Twitter.

Many women, unfortunately, endure sexual abuse and now these stories of sexual assault at holy places prove that women are not safe anywhere, not even at religious places like Mecca. Many people believe that women’s way of clothing is the main reason why they get assaulted but women in Hajj are fully covered from head to toe and praying still they are getting assaulted.
