Chippa cruise into Nedbank Cup last 16

2018-02-10 18:34

Cape Town - Chippa United eased into the Nedbank Cup round of 16 after claiming a comfortable 2-0 victory over ABC Motsepe League side Phiva Young Stars at the Kabokweni Stadium on Saturday.

The Chilli Boys were in full control for much of the match and took a 2-0 lead into the break with goals from Ayabulela Konqobe and Linda Mntambo.

The visitors had further chances to add to their lead but in the end it was an easy win for Teboho Moloi's men.

The Premiership club stamped their authority on the contest as they began to dominate ball possession in the opening stages.

They made their superiority count inside the first 15 minutes as Konqobe took advantage of Mntambo's free-kick to finish off at the far post beyond goalkeeper Motshoshi Baloyi.

Thabo Rakhale nearly made it 2-0 Soon after from inside the area, but saw his half-volley blocked away from target.

Nonetheless, on the half-hour mark Mntambo did double Chippa's advantage as he ran on to Rakhale's pass to finish into the top left-hand corner.

Sizwe Mdlinzo had a good chance to make it 3-0 just before the interval, but was denied at point-blank range by the brave Baloyi.

It was a much tighter second period with the Chilli Boys seemingly happy to hold on to the lead. However, Young Stars did muster an opening after previously seeing most of their attempts fly harmlessly wide from long range.

Forward Isaac Nana was alert to a ball in broken play and tested Brighton Mhlongo, who made a solid stop.

Mntambo had a chance to convert his brace in the closing stages after a defensive mix-up in the home defence, but his finish was off target as it ended 2-0 in Mpumalanga.
