Tamil Nadu has shown major improvements in bringing down the maternal mortality rate, said Union minister of state for health and family welfare Ashwini Kumar
Choubey on Saturday. "I am happy to say that Tamil Nadu is one of the states with the lowest mortality rate. Hospitals here are focusing on maternal health very well," he said.
Choubey was speaking at the inauguration of a new super-specialty facility at the
Sri Ramakrishna Hospital in the city.
He said 'NaMo Care', the national health safety scheme announced at a budget of Rs 2,000 crore, was the first of its kind in the world. "The scheme will benefit 10 crore poor and deprived people and their family members. Under this scheme, each family will get a coverage of Rs 5 lakh. This is the biggest government health scheme in the world," he said.
Choubey said the Centre was keen on establishing an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Tamil Nadu. "Five new
AIIMS colleges will be set up across the nation by 2022," he said. He said the budget of the National Health Mission (NHM) for 2017-2018 was Rs 21,940.70 crore, but it was increased to Rs 24,908.61crore for 2018-19. "There is a growth of 14%," he said.
