Srinagar, Feb 10: A JCO has been been martyred in an attack by suspected Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists at an Army camp in Sunjwan during wee hours on Saturday. Six others, including the daughter of an Army man, are said to be injured. Earlier in the morning, Indian Air Force (IAF) para commandos were airlifted to Jammu from Udhampur. Another aircraft is airborne to airlift para commandos from Sarsawa. Three to four terrorists are believed to be holed up inside a JCO quarter. The area has been cordoned off by the security forces and the operation is underway.
Fresh gunshots were heard inside the Sunjwan Army camp during search and combing operation launched by the security forces after the attack.
Earlier, Jammu Inspector General of Police (IGP) SD Singh Jamwal has claimed that two persons have died in the attack whereas, four others are injured.
In the wake of the terrorist attack in Sunjwan, the district administration has asked schools within 500 meters of the Army camp to remain closed until further orders. Meanwhile, Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid over the attack on Sunjwan Army camp. He has also directed the MHA officials to look into the matter.
The attack was initiated by the terrorists around 4.55 AM on Saturday when a suspicious movement was noticed by the santri. The number of terrorists is not known yet, an official told reporters. He also added that the terrorists have been cornered in one of the family quarters. The camp, strategically located on Srinagar-Jammu-Pathankot highway, is surrounded by dense population. It has hundred of quarters for the families of the armymen.
Intelligence inputs had warned an attack on the army or security establishment in view of the fifth death anniversary of Afsal Guru on February 9. The terrorists breached the rear side of the Sunjwan Army camp near Chenni in the outskirts of the city.
The attack on Sunjwan Army camp comes after Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) for over three times in less than 72 hours.
LeT Terrorist Escapes From SMCH Hospital
On February 6, a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Naveed Jatt aka Abu Hanzulla had escaped from SMCH hospital after opening fire at the police personnel. Two cops were killed in the attack. Hanzulla was arrested in August 2015 from Kulgam after he and one of his aide attacked a BSF convoy in Udhampur.
Earlier on February 5, terrorists had hurled grenades at the Indian Army camp situated in Kakpora area of Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir. No injury or casualty was reported in the attack.
