Samajwadi Party leaders created a ruckus in the Legislative Council and squatted in the Well of the House raising anti-government slogans on Friday.

The SP members demanded a judicial probe into the Kasganj communal strife. Later amidst disruption, Chairman of the House Ramesh Yadav postponed the proceedings for the day till 11am on Monday.

Raising the issue of violence in Kasganj through an adjournment notice, Leader of Opposition in the House, Ahmed Hassan along with other party leaders including Vasudev Yadav, Sanjay Kumar Mishra, Satrudh Prakash and Dr Aseem Yadav, demanded a judicial probe into the matter and also to stop the proceedings of the House and debate the issue.

Dr Mahendra Singh of the BJP informed that the government had already taken necessary action in the incident. The proceedings, however, took a turn when minister of state for Haj and Minority Mohsin Raza reacted on the issue leading to a hot debate between the BJP and SP members.

Later agitated SP leaders stormed the Well raising slogans against the government. Assessingt the chaos and disruption, Chairman Ramesh Yadav twice stopped the proceedings for 15-minutes each and when the SP members continued their protest, he postponed the proceedings for the day.

Earlier during Question Hour, the state government informed the Council that there had been no death of ‘shiksha mitras’ (teaching assistants) during their protests. The government was, however, asked by Chairman Ramesh Yadav to verify a list of 104 ‘shiksha mitras’ who reportedly died during protests and take appropriate action. The list was presented by Samajwadi Party legislator Anand Bhadauria.

Raising the issue during Question Hour, Bhadauria asked the government as to how many ‘shiksha mitras’ had lost their lives while participating in protests and agitations. In reply, Basic Education minister Anupama Jaiswal said, “As per the information provided by District Basic Education Officers, no ‘shiksha mitra’ died participating in the protests. The government has given age relaxation and weightage to ‘shiksha mitras’ in recruitment examination of teachers.”

On a supplementary question, Bhadauria said that he had information that 104 ‘shiksha mitras’ for primary classes in government schools died during the protests and asked if the government would confirm the list and provide compensation.
