In bid to solve faculty crunch

In an attempt to solve faculty crunch, particularly in Northeastern States, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has come up with a unique initiative; project for design, development of e-learning, courses in health and medical sciences using virtual teaching.

“This kind of focused and organised supplemental teaching material, used by both students and teachers, would be of benefit to medical undergraduates, nursing and para-medical students,” noted a release issued by AIIMS on Saturday.

This newly introduce a virtual teaching programme was initially funded by the National Knowledge Network (NKN) and involved seen medical colleges all over India.

“In this, teaching modules were made by dedicated faculty at AIIMS and other centres, send to participating colleges via the NKN cable, and viewed by students and faculty,” noted the release.

Dr. Manoj Singh, Department of Pathology, AIIMS said, “The feedback from students and teachers was good. Almost everyone felt that this was a workable idea as a partial roll-out of the project AIIMS and CDAC (Noida) undertook a project where e-content is being delivered to students at NEIGRIHMS, Shillong and RIMS, Imphal.’’

AIIMS held a two-day conclave which began on February 8 which “served as a platform for zeroing in on the syllabus of the virtual teaching programme.”
